The Apocrypha of the Old Testament – an outline based on the 1973 Oxford Annotated Apocrypha of the RSV by Bruce Metzger

  • 1st Book of Esdras: Regarding the reforms of Josiah, Zerubbabel and Ezra
  • 2nd Book of Esdras: Attributed to Ezra – Apocalyptic with 7 revelations instructed by the angel Uriel.
  • Tobit:  Romance reminiscent of “Arabian Nights” set in Nineveh, w/ Angel Raphael
  • Judith:  In 12th year of the reign of Nebuchadnezzar – assassination of Holofornes – Note similarities with Esther/Haman and Jael/Sisera (Judges 4.17-24)
  • Additions to the Book of Esther Chapters 11-16 and 10a, 11a
  • The Wisdom of Solomon, or The Book of Wisdom: Attributed to Solomon but written or edited by a member of the Jewish community living in Alexandria during the 1st century B.C. Probably in response to Pompey’s victory (67-63B.C.) in the eastern Mediterranean and involvement in the political affairs of Jerusalem.
  • Ecclesiasticus, or the Wisdom of Jesus the Son of Sirach:  51 chapters- Written in Hebrew by Jesus ben Sirach between 200-175BC and translated into Greek by his grandson after 132BC.
  • Baruch:  Jeremiah’s Secretary
  • The Letter of Jeremiah to the Jews in Babylon (597BC) Chapter 6 of Baruch?
  • The Prayer of Azariah and the Song of the Three Young Men- Additions to Daniel, inserted between 3.23 and 3.24- Azariah is Abednego- See Canticles 12 & 13 of BCP, pages 88- 90
  • Susanna — Chapter 13 of Daniel (Vulgate)
  • Bel and the Dragon — Chapter 14 of Daniel (Vulgate)
  • The Prayer of Manasseh – See Canticle 14 of BCP, page 90- See also: 2 Chronicles 33.1-9, 11-13, 18-19
  • 1 Maccabees: History of Judas Maccabeus and family, 175 – 134BC
  • 2 Maccabees: History of Judas Maccabeus and family, 180 – 161BC by Jason of Cyrene, 124BC
